Boarding Schools for Troubled Teens

Many parents choose to send their teens to an out-of-state private boarding school. These private boarding schools provide a quality education along with effective discipline. Parents can choose to send their teen to an "all boys" or "all girls" school and can even decide to choose a Christian or non-Christian school.

Residential Treatment Centers

Residential treatment centers provide troubled teens with a safe and structured environment where they can work on any number of emotional and/or behavioral issues. Teens work on such issues as anger, addiction, depression, abuse, delinquency, thought disorders, and much more.

About residential treatment centers:
  • Teens are placed out of the home and actually live at the center during treatment.
  • Residential treatment is somewhat long term (several weeks to several months).
  • Most will take insurance or have sliding scale payment options.
  • Teens participate in academics, individual therapy, and milieu therapy while at the center.

  • State Agencies and Helplines

Despite the number and variety of issues that arise while raising a troubled teen, there is most certainly an agency or hotline waiting and willing to help. You'll find agencies and hotlines which address issues such as suicide, teen pregnancy, domestic violence, runaways, drugs, and much more. Browse through our listings and get the help you need. We offer state by state listings.

    Wilderness Camps for Teens

Wilderness camps can be an excellent alternative to juvenile boot camps. These outdoor therapy programs address emotional as well as behavioral issues without resorting to the militaristic methods that boot camps use. Teens work on self-esteem, teamwork, and much more while surrounded by nothing but wilderness. These programs typically last about 30 days and can cost between $8,000 and $14,000.

    Boot Camps for Troubled Teens

Boot camps use discipline, military exercises, and rigorous physical training to "break" troubled and/or defiant teens. Parents have a choice of sending their troubled teen to a private or state run boot camp.

    About boot camps:
  • Boot camps were created as a short-term alternative to military boarding schools
  • Participants are typically defiant, disrespectful teens in need of serious discipline
  • Boot camps are not typically as effective as residential treatment centers but less expensive

  • Home-Based Behavior Programs

For some parents, the expense of sending their teen away to a boarding school or residential treatment center makes it impossible. A home-based behavior program such as The Parent Coach Plan, TeenBehaviorContracts.com or The Total Transformation can help those parents that can't afford to send their teens away for expensive treatment. These programs are inexpensive and can be very effective.
